Cafe Gloria Jean's is trialling cashless payments in some of its Australian shops, it has confirmed.
The company will no longer accept cash from later this month at the cafes it owns, it said.
It said this is due to "customer payment preferences" as well as for the "safety" of staff.
"We believe that going cashless will not only create a safer environment for our staff but also streamline operations, allowing us to serve our customers more efficiently," a spokeswoman for Retail Food group which owns the company told 9News.
"The vast majority of Gloria Jean's outlets are owned and operated by our valued franchise partners who set their own policies regarding cash handling."
The notice in a Gloria Jeans shop about the change was posted in the Cash is King Facebook group.
The company was started by Gloria Jean Kvetko in Chicago in 1979.
It first opened branches in Sydney in 1996, and now has over 100, most of which are franchises.
Despite ongoing efforts to promote cashless transactions, new research showed consumers still prefer a wide range of payment options - including cash.
Earlier this year Australian researchers showed paying without cash does in fact lead to people spending more.
